Ford’s BlueCruise 1.5 Adds Automatic Lane Changes

Ford has introduced a new feature to its BlueCruise hands-free highway driving software: Automatic Lane Change. This enhancement, part of the latest BlueCruise 1.5 update, aims to make highway driving smoother and more intuitive by allowing the vehicle to change lanes autonomously when needed.
Imagine cruising along the highway at 70 mph when you encounter a semi-truck ahead traveling at 55 mph. With BlueCruise 1.5, your vehicle can automatically change lanes to pass the truck, keeping you at your preferred speed without requiring any manual intervention. This feature, developed by Ford’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) team, enhances the driving experience by minimizing disruptions and extending hands-free driving time.
BlueCruise 1.5 ensures that lane changes feel natural. The system is designed to avoid merging into lanes with much faster traffic, steering clear of right-hand lanes near off-ramps, and preventing scenarios where manual input would be necessary. These considerations allow drivers to remain in hands-free mode for longer periods, optimizing the convenience and ease of highway driving. Internal testing reveals that, on average, BlueCruise 1.5 automates about 45% of lane changes during a typical drive.
The process behind an automatic lane change is straightforward. When the system detects an open adjacent lane and determines there is enough time to move smoothly, it initiates the maneuver. Drivers receive visual and audio alerts before the change occurs, along with a message explaining the reason for the lane shift, such as bypassing slower traffic or vacating the passing lane. If a driver prefers to stay in the current lane, they can cancel the lane change by either activating the turn signal in the opposite direction or holding the steering wheel steady. For those who prefer full control, the Automatic Lane Change feature can be disabled through the Driver Assistance settings.
BlueCruise first debuted on the Mustang Mach-E, and since then, Ford has continually refined the software to enhance its performance. Earlier versions, such as BlueCruise 1.2 and 1.3, brought improvements to driving on curves and through narrow lanes. With BlueCruise 1.5 launching on the 2025 Mustang Mach-E, drivers can look forward to better highway performance in various conditions, alongside the new automatic lane-changing capability.
The 2025 Mustang Mach-E will be among the first vehicles equipped with this latest version of BlueCruise. Ford plans to release additional information about which other models will receive the update in the future.
Usage statistics show the growing popularity of BlueCruise among drivers. In the U.S. last year, approximately 77% of BlueCruise sessions lasted under 20 minutes, with more than half of highway trips longer than an hour utilizing the hands-free driving feature. Whether for daily commutes or longer road trips, BlueCruise has become a valuable tool for making highway driving more enjoyable and stress-free.
This continuous evolution of BlueCruise reflects Ford’s commitment to developing smarter, safer, and more convenient driving technologies, giving drivers greater confidence and comfort on the road.
