Ford Returns to Pikes Peak for EV Powertrain Innovation

June 3rd, 2024 by

Ford Performance is set to return to the winding mountain roads and sharp corners of “America’s Mountain,” the iconic Pikes Peak, to further advance its electric powertrain research and development. This time, they’re bringing an electrifying powerhouse: the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck.

The F-150 Lightning SuperTruck is gearing up to participate in the 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, an event sponsored by Gran Turismo, in late June. Building on Ford’s best-selling electric pickup, the Ford Performance team has enhanced the truck’s aerodynamics and power output to tackle the grueling 12.5-mile uphill challenge. This event is an ideal testing ground for electric powertrains, allowing Ford to push the limits of EV technology in extreme conditions and apply those insights to its production vehicles.

These high-performance vehicles, like the SuperTruck, serve as mobile laboratories, aiding the development of crucial components such as motors, inverters, and battery packs. They also help fine-tune software calibration and improve battery cell chemistry, among other technological areas. This real-world testing is vital for the continuous improvement and innovation of Ford’s electric vehicle lineup.

Ford has released the first teaser for the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, which will be driven by Romain Dumas. Carrying competitor number 150, the SuperTruck will make its qualifying run in Colorado Springs from June 18-20, followed by the Hill Climb on June 23.

This marks the second consecutive year Ford has entered an electric test vehicle in the Pikes Peak competition. In 2023, Ford’s 1,400-horsepower Electric SuperVan 4.2, based on the Ford Pro’s E-Transit Custom Van, set a class record and secured a victory.

Ford Performance’s efforts extend beyond Pikes Peak. They are gaining valuable insights from other electric demonstration race vehicles, such as the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 and Mustang Mach-E 1400. These vehicles are crucial for studying battery cell chemistry, heat generation, and cooling. Additionally, Ford is expanding its expertise in hybrid powertrains through its strategic partnership with Oracle Red Bull Racing, preparing for a reentry into Formula 1 in 2026.

Ford’s relentless pursuit of electric powertrain innovation and performance is evident in its commitment to challenging real-world conditions. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb offers a unique and demanding environment for pushing the boundaries of what electric vehicles can achieve, paving the way for the future of electrified transportation.

Ford Performance’s return to Pikes Peak is a bold statement of Ford’s commitment to leading the charge in electric vehicle technology. By pushing their electric powertrains to the limit in one of the most challenging environments, Ford is not only proving the capabilities of their vehicles but also ensuring that the future of transportation is electric, exciting, and sustainable.
