In a resounding acknowledgement of Ford’s commitment to sustainability, the Society of Plastics Engineers has honored the automaker’s ingenious redesign of the Ford Mustang Mach-E® frunk insert with a prestigious sustainability award. This remarkable achievement stems from a dedicated team’s innovation, leading to a simplified design that significantly amplifies post-consumer recycled content while enhancing efficiency and reducing costs.

The journey toward sustainability saw the transformation of the Mustang Mach-E frunk insert, an integral component that underwent a remarkable evolution. The team revolutionized the design, transitioning it from six pieces to a singular unit, meticulously crafted from recycled packaging materials, equivalent in weight to approximately 115 post-consumer yogurt cups. This redesign not only streamlined the frunk but also shed over 6.6 pounds in weight, culminating in a substantial reduction in part costs.

Donna Dickson, Mustang Mach-E chief program engineer, expressed her pride in the team’s achievement, emphasizing the company’s dedication to delivering environmentally conscious solutions without compromising on customer satisfaction. “Our customers love the Mustang Mach-E, and this action is a great example of how we’re not resting on our laurels,” Dickson remarked. This initiative involves 3,000 Tier 1 supplier sites, aimed at measuring, mitigating, and reducing emissions. Notably, between 2019 and 2022, Ford successfully slashed its overall Scope 3 emissions by an estimated 23%, a testament to its unwavering dedication to reducing environmental impact.
