Dallas Selects Ford Pro to Adopt EVs and Meet Climate Goals

May 27th, 2024 by

As the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States, the City of Dallas is taking a significant step towards a greener future by collaborating with Ford’s commercial division, Ford Pro™, to electrify its vehicle fleet. This initiative aligns with the city’s broader climate goals aimed at enhancing air quality and reducing carbon emissions by 2040.

Dallas and Ford Pro have entered into a 10-year agreement to expand and manage the city’s EV charging infrastructure. This partnership will see the installation of Ford Pro chargers at various city worksites, complemented by Ford Pro’s smart charging software. This integrated hardware and software solution will enable Dallas to optimize the charging of its fleet vehicles, ensuring they are ready for operation when needed.

This initiative supports the Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan (CECAP) approved by the City of Dallas in 2020. The CECAP includes ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions, which involve installing EV chargers throughout the city and incorporating light-duty electric vehicles into the city’s existing fleet of 5,400 vehicles.

Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson emphasized the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability. “The City of Dallas is committed to a clean, safe, and healthy environment, and we’re making great strides in our efforts to reduce emissions and improve air quality,” Johnson said. “This agreement with Ford Pro marks a significant milestone and will help our city avoid energy waste and save money on energy costs. We look forward to building upon our work with Ford Pro to further scale EV charging infrastructure and electrify our fleet operations to continue to serve our great city now and in the future.”

Ford Pro CEO Ted Cannis echoed these sentiments, highlighting the growing trend of EV adoption among state and local government fleets. “EV adoption is on the rise with state and local government fleets, and we’re proud to provide smart charging software and hardware to help electrify one of the Lone Star State’s biggest cities in one of America’s biggest metro areas,” Cannis said. “The impact software can have on EV charging can be substantial, helping public agencies like the City of Dallas not only manage charging infrastructure today, but help determine where chargers may be needed in the future.”

The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum among state and local governments across the United States. There are currently four million vehicles operated by these entities, and the U.S. government has set a target for most federal vehicle purchases to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035. This trend is likely to influence state and local governments as well.

Ford Pro Charging already serves hundreds of local government customers, providing them with high-quality EV chargers and smart charging software. This move towards electrification is driven by various factors, including rising fuel costs, the potential for lower operational costs with EVs, and the suitability of EVs for municipal use cases.

Ford Pro offers an always-on, connected customer experience through a complete suite of solutions that include vehicles, charging, software, financing, and service for commercial and government customers.
