Bronco Off-Roadeo Celebrates Veterans and Military Families

In a heartfelt celebration of service and sacrifice, Ford recently hosted the first-ever Proud to Honor: Bronco Off-Roadeo, a unique event designed to honor veterans, military families, and survivors. This initiative, inspired by Blue Star Families’ “Do Your Part” campaign, sought to bring together the military community in the scenic Texas hill country.

The Bronco Off-Roadeo is not just any driving school; it’s an adventure experience where enthusiasts learn the art of off-road driving using Ford’s Bronco family SUVs. Set in stunning locations across the United States, the Proud to Honor event specifically took place in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, drawing 150 participants from various military backgrounds.

The event provided an all-expenses-paid experience for the attendees, ensuring they could fully immerse themselves in the adventure without any financial concerns. The experience was further enriched by the presence of Off-Roadeo trail guides who were also U.S. veterans, fostering a deeper sense of camaraderie and shared experience.

Chris Smith, Ford’s Chief Government Affairs Officer and a West Point graduate and former U.S. Army officer, delivered a powerful speech, reinforcing Ford’s dedication to the military community. Participants also had access to Veterans Affairs representatives and resources, offering essential support and information.

The Off-Roadeo program included several meaningful activities: coaching by veteran trail guides to ensure participants received expert instruction while forging connections through shared military experiences; engagement with Ford’s military employment team, providing valuable insights into career opportunities at Ford for veterans and their families; a historical presentation by Ted Ryan, Ford’s Archives and Heritage brand manager, who shared captivating stories about Ford’s contributions to the military and the Bronco’s history; a musical performance by Guitars 4 Vets, who entertained the crowd with renditions of “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Margaritaville,” adding a musical touch to the event; and a challenge coin exchange where Ford veteran employees distributed Ford Challenge Coins, symbolizing respect and unity within the military community.

Ford’s relationship with the military dates back over a century, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to supporting those who serve. During World War I, Ford’s industrial capabilities were harnessed to produce essential military equipment, from trucks to ambulances and Eagle Boats. Following the war, Ford implemented a pioneering policy to hire disabled veterans, a practice that continued through subsequent conflicts, including WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

In 1922, Ford made a significant contribution by donating 50 Model Ts to the National Convention for Disabled Veterans, establishing a long-standing partnership with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). This collaboration endures today, with Ford continuing to support the DAV through Ford Philanthropy.

During WWII, as men joined the armed forces, Ford employed hundreds of thousands of women, epitomizing the “Rosie the Riveter” spirit and showcasing the collective effort on the home front. The Bronco also boasts a military history, having been used as a civil defense vehicle during the Vietnam War due to its robustness and off-road capabilities.

Ford’s dedication to the military extends to the present day through various initiatives, including signing the PAYS Act to guarantee job interviews for active-duty military personnel and earning a gold level certification as a veteran-friendly employer. The company has also pledged a five-year commitment to the veteran-led disaster relief organization Team Rubicon, providing a fleet of 17 vehicles and ongoing volunteer support. Additionally, Ford has been ranked #1 OEM for Vets in 2023 by Military Times and supports veteran employees within the company through its VET NG group.

Blue Star Families, the nation’s largest chapter-based military and veteran family support organization, has been instrumental in driving community-building efforts. Since its inception in 2009, Blue Star Families has delivered over $200 million in benefits, impacting more than 1.5 million people annually.

The “Do Your Part” initiative, supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies, encourages companies, non-profits, and individuals to collaborate in supporting the military community. Ford’s participation in this initiative underscores its commitment to honoring and uplifting those who have served.

The Proud to Honor: Bronco Off-Roadeo event was a testament to Ford’s unwavering support for veterans and military families. By providing a platform for adventure, connection, and celebration, Ford continues to honor the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving their country.
