As futuristic, advanced, and convenient as electric vehicles are, trying to accurately estimate exactly how much driving range one has left can be a challenge. Now, Ford seeks to change that narrative by debuting all-new innovative Intelligent Range technology as a standard feature on the upcoming Mustang Mach-E.

“Electric vehicle customers need to be able to trust their range estimates,” said Darren Palmer, Ford’s global director of battery electric vehicles. “People want to be confident they’re going to make it where they need to go, whether they’re on a road trip or coming home from work. Our new Intelligent Range feature helps ensure Mustang Mach-E owners around the globe know where they stand ahead of time, freeing them up to enjoy the ride.”

Intelligent Range works by calculating electric vehicle range based on past driver behavior as well as forecasted weather conditions. This information is then stored in the cloud in order to better predict how much energy will be used in future drives based on these factors.

The Mach-E’s battery system reports the amount of energy available, while the powertrain module tracks the amount of energy being used. Since varying weather and temperature can impact range, Intelligent Range takes that into consideration too, before updating estimated range in real-time along the way.

Ford’s Intelligent Range technology will also allow for crowdsourced data from other connected Ford electric vehicles. When other EV drivers choose to share their information, the accuracy of range estimates will improve considerably once again.

When this driver assist technology is activated, Mustang Mach-E customers will receive a notification via their instrument cluster whenever range is impacted by any number of factors. Drivers will be notified of the new estimated range as well as details about why it changed.

In the event that the Mustang Mach-E does run out of charge on the road, Ford’s Roadside Assistance program will tow customers to wherever they like so long as the destination is within 35 miles. If the nearest charging station or a customer’s home is more than 35 miles away, Ford guarantees that Mach-E customers will be taken to the nearest available charging location.

Ford’s Intelligent Range will be updated via over-the-air technology, meaning you’ll never have to go to a dealership to get access to the most recent tech. An eventual update to Intelligent Range will take even more advantage of cloud-connected capabilities, allowing the Mach-E’s estimated range to account for additional factors like real-time traffic, road slope, terrain, and elevation.

“Changes in driver behavior and the environment can impact range, which is the reason other electric vehicles often experience significant range adjustments,” said Mark Poll, Ford’s EV charging user experience manager. “Ford is tapping the power of the cloud to make estimates even more accurate – reducing the need for surprise charging stops and helping reduce customers’ range anxiety.”
