Ford Now Using Virtual Reality to Design Vehicles

So far this century, the development, integration. and commercial utilization of technology has grown faster than it has at any point in world history. Considering that, it’s no surprise that America’s most influential vehicle manufacturer has already been using the latest cutting-edge tech for some time now.

While designing a vehicle exclusively took place on paper as recently as 60 years ago, the technological age has contributed significantly to the evolution of the process. These days, with help from Gravity Sketch, a London-based virtual reality company, Ford is designing the vehicles of the future using a unique VR program.

Gravity Sketch’s immersive technology blends speed with creativity to give Ford designers a 360-degree view of the vehicle at every stage in the process. Inside the Ford design studio, Ford designers, architects, and engineers use a virtual reality room, headsets, and controllers that allow these employees to be inside the vehicle they’re designing, adjusting and tailoring each product in real-time as it evolves throughout the overall design process.

Prior to this advancement, automotive design began with pencil-and-paper sketches that were evaluated by a team. The team would choose the best sketches and scan them into a computer in order to create a high-quality, 3-D illustration. From there, the 3-D model could finally be evaluated and necessary adjustments could be made. This process worked well enough for years, but the time and dedication it required could not be ignored.

Now, thanks to Gravity Sketch, designers are given the ability to create and adjust in real-time with no middle-man, speeding up the overall design process from weeks to hours.

“This application has the potential to help ensure we are delivering the very best vehicle designs for our customers,” said Michael Smith, Ford design manager. “It moves the entire process into the world of virtual reality, giving us greater options for reviewing more models in the 3-D environment to create the best possible vehicles.”

Ford’s main priority continues to be the design and building of vehicles that are focused on driver needs like safety, reliability, and the joy of driving. With this unique tool, Ford’s vehicle designers have been given the ability to scale the vehicle experience down to a human level, keeping drivers at the forefront of every decision and putting Ford vehicles at the forefront of absolute comfort and convenience.
